My husband and I do not always get big trips or long getaways, and that is fine with me. Sometimes, a day off is enough. A day with movement, good food, a little pampering, and time together before going back to family routines.
This time, I had two extra days off from work on top of the holiday weekend, and my husband took time off too after working at the same company for almost 10 years. Instead of thinking of it as a vacation, I saw it as two date days. Something fun, simple, and still workable around kids, pickup times, and practice later in the day.
Why I Like a Date Day
For us, a date day is not about spending a lot of money or making it look a certain way. It is about quality time together. It is about being present with each other in a way that feels calm and easy, without needing to turn it into a big production.
Some people enjoy sharing their dates online, and that is fine. We prefer to keep more of our life private. What matters to us is the time itself.
Thursday
Thursday started the way most of my mornings do, with a 6am class at Bodyrok. I have been going for a little over a year now. I go that early so I can get back home before the kids wake up and the school morning begins. It is the one window that is fully mine before the day gets busy.
My husband had been curious for a while about what pulls me out of bed at that hour, so I invited him to join me. He said yes right away. I told him to wear shorts or sweats and a T-shirt, and I grabbed him a pair of grip socks so he would be ready.
We got there about seven minutes before class started and the instructor went over how to use the reformer with him. The class that day was Cardio Sculpt, which is one of the harder ones. Not the easiest introduction, but that is the class that was offered that day.
Everyone else in the class was a regular, so the transitions moved fast. Every time he got the hang of an exercise, it was already time to move on to the next one. The core work was where it got him the most. He told me afterward that a regular plank is already hard for him, so doing plank-ups on a moving carriage was on another level. At the end of class he genuinely enjoyed it and asked me how long it took before I felt comfortable. Then a few hours later, out of nowhere, he looked at me and said: “my abs!!!”
That made me laugh. That is exactly why I keep going.
After we freshened up at home, we went to Nikuya Stone and Grill Bar in Pleasanton for lunch. We had never been before. It is all-you-can-eat on weekdays for $26 per person and you order through a mobile app at the table. The sushi rolls were good but the wagyu was the highlight for us. We also loved the salmon sunomono. Service was quick and the whole lunch felt easy and relaxed. I like trying a new spot on days like this. It does not need to be fancy, just something a little different from our usual.
Then we drove out to Royal Nails Spa in Livermore for pedicures. It was farther than we expected but we made it work. They offered us complimentary drinks when we arrived and we both brought books to read. I brought Kin and picked a strawberry milkshake color for my nails. My favorite parts were the paraffin wax and the foot grater for my heels.
It was my husband’s first pedicure. He has been running for decades so his feet have taken a lot of wear and the technician worked hard on him, especially on a pinky nail that had split a while back and on smoothing out his heels. He said the cuticle work was uncomfortable but that his feet felt so much better after. For a first timer, he was a good sport about the whole thing. One thing to note: they prefer cash and will give you a discount if you pay that way, so come prepared.
We ended the day at Murrieta’s Well in Livermore for wine tasting. It was getting hot so we went inside. They greeted us with a pour of the 2024 The Whip, which is a white blend with bright, fresh flavors. Since I prefer lighter whites, the staff adjusted the tasting for me and I tried a few different whites and a rosé. My favorites ended up being the Rosé and the Whip. My husband tried the reds and loved the 2023 Zarzuela, a club-only blend that he said pairs perfectly with Spanish food. Between the two of us we tried about 75 percent of their wines. We brought home a bottle of the Whip and the Zarzuela. He is already planning a Spanish dinner with paella around it.
Friday
Friday was more about recovery and rest, which was what we both needed after Thursday.
We started the morning with a couple’s massage at Jade Spa. It came recommended through my coworker’s chiropractor, which felt like a trustworthy referral. When we arrived they recognized us right away and brought us to our room but did not really tell us what to do from there. My husband stepped out to ask, which was the right move. We know the general etiquette but every place is different and we wanted to make sure we knew what to expect.
The massage itself was really good. My masseuse worked down my spine joint by joint, which is the kind of detail that tells you a lot about how seriously someone takes their work. She spent a good amount of time on the knots in my upper back, then finished with my fingers, neck, and a head massage. I felt it for the rest of the day in the best way.
One thing to know about Jade Spa: it is not a luxury spa experience. There is no fancy ambiance or intake process. It is a no-frills maintenance massage, and if you go in with that understanding, you will not be disappointed. They also prefer cash so bring some with you.
After the massage we picked up our son for lunch. He said he wanted chicken nuggets so we figured McDonald’s, but he corrected us immediately. He wanted The Habit, and not even for the nuggets. He loves upgrading his fries to their tempura-style green beans and he tried their new Blue Wave milkshake, which tasted like Neapolitan ice cream. He knew what he wanted and he was right.
We wrapped up with about an hour at the San Francisco Premium Outlets in Livermore. The long weekend sales had started but nothing really stood out to us. We walked around, enjoyed the time together, and left without buying anything.
What These Days Mean to Me
At the heart of both days, I wanted quality time with my husband without making it feel like a performance. I wanted to share a little of my world with him, especially the early morning part that keeps me grounded and disciplined. I also wanted to do something kind for him in a way that felt personal and low pressure.
I think people sometimes overcomplicate what a good date needs to be. For us it can be a workout, a new lunch spot, a pedicure, a massage, and a little shopping. It can also mean being home in time for pickup and still having dinner together as a family. That balance is what makes it feel sustainable, not just a one-time thing.
Not big spending. Not public posting. Just time together that feels private, calm, and worthwhile. For us, that is enough.
How to Plan a Date Day with Kids
The main thing is to keep it simple. One active thing, one meal, one care stop, and one flexible extra is usually all you need.
Choose places that fit your schedule and do not require you to disappear for a full day. A few hours with a thoughtful plan goes a long way.
A few practical tips:
- Start with one activity your spouse can join, even if it is new to them
- Pick a meal in the middle so the day does not feel rushed
- Add one small pampering stop
- Leave room for family pickups and responsibilities
- Keep one part of the day open and flexible
Why This Works Better Than a Getaway
A getaway is nice, but a date day fits into life as it is. You do not have to step outside your routine or arrange a full weekend away to feel connected. You just have to be intentional with a few hours and show up for each other.
That is what I like about it. It is something we can keep doing.

FAQ
What is a date day for parents?
A date day is a daytime date planned around your family schedule, kids, school pickup, practice, and everything in between. It is not a full getaway. It is a few intentional hours with your spouse that fit into the life you already have.
How do you plan a date day with kids?
Keep it simple. One activity, one meal, one relaxation stop, and one flexible extra is usually enough to make the day feel special without turning it into a project. The key is choosing places and timing that work around your family logistics, not against them.
Does a date day have to be expensive?
No. The point is time together, not the price tag. Most of what makes a date day feel good is the intention behind it, a new lunch spot, something your spouse has never tried before, a slower afternoon than usual. That does not require a big budget.
Why do date days work for busy parents?
Because they fit into your actual life. You do not have to arrange childcare for a full weekend or step away from your routine completely. A few thoughtful hours during the day can be enough to reconnect, especially when the plan feels easy and low pressure. But you do have to take PTO for unplugged date days.
